Appointed Championship Artist in 2017, Houghton was commissioned to produce a series of documentary paintings, including works representing six of the finals. Aside from capturing the action on court, Houghton’s eye was drawn to the everyday sights of ‘a club that suddenly becomes international’: painters marking the court lines, the snaking queues of people, and Rufus, Wimbledon’s resident pigeon-deterring Harris Hawk. Then the following year as part of the 150th anniversary of the All England Club there was also an exhibition of Houghton’s extended Wimbledon portfolio where proceeds of sales went towards the Wimbledon foundation.
